Frequently Asked Questions

Thinking about bringing your show to the Edinburgh Fringe? Fantastic — we’d love to hear from you. Hoots is an open, supportive, and artist-led venue that champions performers at every stage of their Fringe journey.

Whether you’re a first-timer or a festival regular, this page covers everything you need to know about applying to perform with us: from how the application process works to what kind of acts we programme, what support you can expect, and what makes performing at Hoots a little bit special.

Who can perform at Hoots?
Anyone. We have a history of comedy, but we welcome any performance artist or group that feel we would be a goood fit for them.
Where do I start?
Begin with the applying for one of our venues. Don't worry if you are unsure which venue is the best fit. We will look at all artists and show types and will discuss with you where it might be best placed. Applying is just the start of the conversation.
Do I need to apply here or to the Fringe Society?
Start here. When your slot is confirmed, you then register your show with Fringe Society so it appears in the programme/app.
How long until you reply?
It can sometimes take a couple of weeks. We get a lot of applications and we are a small team. Do not be afreaid to give us a nudge if we take too long. We won't be offended!
Where do I find tech specs?
Each room has different tech, these will be shared as part of the application process.

However, we are about making the fringe affordable. Over teching is a classic way artist lose money. Think about was is important before deciding on a venue. it's about show content, not tech.

We will provide solid tech; spots, floods, lighting board, sound system , mics, stage. Some rooms have screens and moving heads etc. Chat to us about your specific needs.
Will the venue handle ticketing and box office?
There are generally two ways your tickets sell; EdFringe.com and via the venue boxoffice. By registering with the Fringe Society you will enable both of these to happen.
What are typical up-front costs?
Typically you will pay 1/3 of your room booking fee when the slot is allocated to you. Another 1/3 closer to the Fringe. With the final 1/3 coming after Ed Fringe payout.

The specific fee for a room varies, some guidance is given in the application.

We are an artist driven operator and know our fees are excellent when compared to other operators. We are here to create bespoke rooms at affordable prices that allow artists to make money at Fringe.
Can I choose my exact venue and time?
You can list preferences, but final slots depend on programming and availability—flexibility improves your chances.
What marketing support do you provide?
You are included in our brochure and website. There will be space for on-site posters and places to put flyers. There are optional paid marketing packages. These can be discussed at application.
What about accessibility requirements?
Venues vary. Flag access needs early and we can discuss which venue is best.
